Welcome to İzmir! The Pearl of the Aegean
Nestled on Türkiye’s western coast along the Aegean Sea, İzmir (historically Smyrna) is a vibrant, sun-bathed city where ancient heritage meets modern life. Today, it is Türkiye’s third largest metropolis and one of its most cosmopolitan and forward-looking cities.

A Glimpse of İzmir

İzmir sits at the crossroads of civilizations, from its roots in ancient Ionia, through Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras, to the modern Turkish Republic.
The city promotes arts, festivals, exhibitions, and creative expression. The “Visit İzmir” initiative keeps a pulse on new cultural programming, events, and city highlights.

İzmir is excellently placed for day trips to iconic sites as Ephesus, Pergamon, and the scenic coastal towns of Çeşme, Urla, Alaçatı, among others.

Expect hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. The ideal times to visit are spring (April–June) when weather is pleasant without oppressive heat.

Must-See Highlights

İzmir offers a wealth of experiences within easy reach. In the heart of the city, Konak Square and its graceful Clock Tower mark the perfect starting point before exploring the bustling Kemeralti Bazaar, filled with local crafts, tea houses, and aromas of Turkish coffee.

History lovers will enjoy the Agora of Smyrna and Kadifekale (Velvet Castle), offering sweeping views of the city. For moments of relaxation, stroll along the Kordon waterfront promenade, admire sunsets at Gündoğdu Square, or unwind in the green oasis of
Kültürpark. A short drive away, the ancient cities of Ephesus and Pergamon, and the coastal towns of Çeşme, Urla, and Alaçatı, offer perfect day trips to experience the broader Aegean charm.
